Rashid Mutua
Chair of the Federation national leaders
Rashid is the current national Muungano wa Wanavijiji federation chairman from Athi River since 2013. He joined the movement in the year 2003 when they were facing eviction threats and encouraged groups in Athi River to join Muungano Development. He contributed to the formation of a regional Muungano wa Wanavijiji movement leadership, with sectors formed for enumeration, land and housing, savings, data collection, loaning, and advocacy to support movement building. Rashid has been very active in advocacy on land and housing since the era of President Moi. The advocacy spirit of the federation led to the need and demand for the 2010 constitution aimed at recognizing people living in informal settlements. He played a significant role in the formation of Akiba Mashinani Trust in 2003, which supported savings initiatives with the slogan "Shilingi Chingli Chingli" and "Akiba Mashinani." Through savings, members purchased land, including Ngeto, Nakuru housing, toy market, and Katani. His goals are to have a strong and vibrant movement that prioritizes community needs, advocates for the rights of all community members, involves more youth in advocating for local resources, and amplifies the voices of the voiceless in various informal settlements in Kenya.
